Saturday Night Fever at SMC!

Happy Saturday! On their first Saturday here at SMC, students were granted their much-needed free time, as well as many opportunities for letting loose during fun activities.

Both the Spanish and Arabic Academies took trips to Church Street in downtown Burlington. I had the pleasure of tagging along with the Arabic Academy, who rode the bus into Burlington and spent time strolling, eating, and shopping - all while speaking in their target language! Check out the photos above of the Arabic Academy posing for group photos on Church Street.

Friday Feature: Interview with Khalid Madhi, SMC Arabic Language Director

Khalid Madhi, PhD is the Language Director of the Arabic Academy here at SMC. Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Khalid about his MIL experiences, both past and present. This is Khalid’s eighth summer with Middlebury Interactive Language Summer Academies. Over his first two years, Khalid worked as an Arabic teacher before transitioning to his current role as LD. Here is what Khalid has to say about his experiences at MIL, the importance of high school language learners, and the first week of the Arabic academy here at SMC:

Rainy Days Call For Cultural Exploration

Greetings from Saint Michael’s! Our sunny skies quickly turned cloudy today, but that did not dampen (pun intended!) the students’ spirits. Though it may have been dull outside, every Arabic and Spanish classroom was filled with bright colors and vibrant chatter thanks to the students’ CE projects.

Calling Home Times: A Reminder from Brenna Rice, Office Manager at SMC

The following is a guest post from Brenna Rice, the Site Office Manager here at Saint Michael's College

Greetings from Vermont! My name is Brenna Rice and I'm the Office Manager at Saint Michael's College this summer. This is my fourth summer with MIL and I'm so excited to be back. I'm even more excited now that the students have arrived!

Telenovelas, and Hieroglyphs, and Soccer - Oh my!

What can I say, it was another busy day here at SMC! Students in the Arabic and Spanish academies had a sunny, activity-filled day which tested their language skills both in and out of the classroom.

Here are some of the highlights:

Meet Margaret, your SMC Social Media Intern!

Hello and welcome parents, families, friends, and readers of the SMC 2017 blog!

Open Minds, Full Stomachs: Exploring Spanish and Arabic Culture Through Traditional Cuisine

Students dove into their first full day of the Language Pledge with open minds, enthusiasm, and a busy schedule! Students in both the Arabic and Spanish academies had a day full of classroom time, cultural exploration courses, and their choice of activities like music, dance, tennis, calligraphy, bingo, sidewalk chalk, Zumba, basketball, soccer, cloud watching and a nature walk - phew! That’s a lot of activities. Thank goodness a brief rainstorm during the activity hour gave way to sunny skies so our students could head outside.
