UPDATE: German and Spanish Call Home Time Switch

Dear parents and guardians of our Spanish and German Academy students,

In order to ensure that the upcoming field trip the Spanish Academy is taking on Saturday 7/12 and the German Coffee and Cake/World Cup watching event on Sunday 7/13 can both be enjoyed by your students to their fullest extent, we have decided to switch the German phone time to Saturday and the Spanish phone time to Sunday:

German Academy Phone Time: Saturday, 4:45-5:30pm EST

Spanish Academy Phone Time: Sunday 4:00-4:45pm EST

Marty’s Corner: The Perfect Day

On Wednesday, July 9, under a blue sky and sunshine the French Academy went on a field trip to Burlington and Middlebury, Vermont. We took a majestic boat ride on Lake Champlain aboard a cruise ship called The Spirit of Ethan Allen. The students relaxed and enjoyed the picturesque shore and islands while conversing in French.

Green Mountain College Academies Hit the Road!

Spanish Academy:

We are amazed at how the students continue to go about their day with such energy and enthusiasm, invigorated by a healthy balance of technical language learning and cultural exploration.

Pique-niques, Empanadas, World Expo Preparations and More!

French Academy:

The day started off with a trip to town, which has become our Sunday ritual. After a requested trips to Shaw’s and Dunkin’ Donuts, we got settled on the lawn for apique-nique, but it wouldn’t have been complete without a goofy photo shoot.

The Team at the Heart of MMLA

Matt is our amazing Activity Coordinator here at the Green Mountain College campus. He organizes, sets up and runs the activities students participate in every day. Fresh off his college graduation from The College of New Jersey, Matt is beyond excited to be joining the Green Mountain College team. He graduated as a Scholar-Athlete with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies and Spanish. His previous MMLA experiences include being a Spanish RA at the Swarthmore Academy and the Activity Coordinator at the Pomona Academy. Matt is a lover of language and travel.

Alternative Activities for the 4th

While Mother Nature had a weathery surprise for us at GMC, in true American fashion, the weather did not rain on our 4th of July fun. Although it did technically rain on our parade, students and staff did not let the storm dampen their excitement for the holiday. At breakfast, the Spanish Academy started a humming of the Star-Spangled Banner that spread through Withey Dining Hall and brought everyone to their feet, pledging their allegiance our grand US of A. Class and activities picked up like normal, demonstrating everyone’s impressive resilience.

Keep Calm and MMLA On

The 4th of July is a day we take to communally remember a value system and struggle for it that occurred more than 200 years ago. This weekend at Green Mountain College we faced our own struggle. Our luxuries today mean that we define emergencies in a new way. The power was out, trees were down, water entered buildings, Main St. was closed.
