East vs. West: What about it?

Can you analyze the cultural differences between the Eastern and Western Worlds? Better yet, can you discuss this topic...all in Chinese?

Here at St. Michael’s, students from the Chinese Academy can.

In an interesting twist on a lesson, students today discussed the differences that face these two separate hemispheres of the world. More notably, however, the students learned that these stark contrasts—some of which have led to certain levels of animosity between these hemispheres—shouldn’t separate the cultures. Instead, they should unify them.

A Kaleidoscopic Day

Today was an extremely kaleidoscopic day. The assistant resident director emphasized the language pledge in the morning assembly in English so that every student could understand the importance of our purpose clearly, which is definitely helping them create the immersive Chinese environment and guarantee their security and safety. After that, students had their normal daily class, and had some nutritious food for lunch.

The Recovery Day

After yesterday's excitement, everyone was due for a quiet, peaceful day. And that's exactly what they got today.

Here's a recap of today's events, as said by the French Academy's Head RE, Hannah:

Colchester 2016: Field Days

"Holding an Olympic Games means evoking history."  - Pierre de Coubertin

Today, history was evoked on St. Michael’s campus.

All thanks to Brenna Rice—our Activities Coordinator at St. Michael’s—this year’s Field Day games were not only an incredible success, but also a huge standout and unifying event for all five of Middlebury Interactive’s Summer Language Academies!

Saturday School...for the Chinese Academy!

Due to their trip to Burlington yesterday, students from the Chinese Academy didn’t have a typical Saturday—instead, they attended classes, making up for the ones that they missed the day before.

However, none of the students complained about this. They brought their enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity to each class, excited to continue their lessons from Thursday.

The Chinese Academy takes on Burlington!

Today, students embarked on their first field trip—an excursion to Burlington!

The whole Chinese Academy boarded the buses at 9:30 AM sharp, and then made the trek to Church Street, which is otherwise known as “Downtown Burlington.” While there, students had the chance to roam, explore the area and shop at all the local stores.

Hard Work Pays Off

For the Chinese Academy, hard work pays off.

Students and teachers are already noticing a tremendous amount of improvement in just a bit over a week of immersion—better yet, students are finding that they’re no longer thinking about speaking Chinese… they’re thinking in Chinese!

This improvement, however, has not come easily—it has come with hard work, dedication and a personal drive to learn the language that is unique to every student.
