Ally, French Academy Student
“My name is Alexandra Templeton, Ally. I'm from northern Virginia, McLean, and I'm studying French. I really want to learn as many languages as possible. It's the one way you can communicate is through language. So why not try and learn as many. Back home in school I have a big gripe with the fact that we only have class three times a week and for an hour. And if you're interested in learning that's not efficient way to learn.
“And here the first thing you say when you wake up is in French and the last thing you say when you go to bed is in French. So it's really different. I'm going to be kind of bummed when I go and I have to speak in English again.
“Yesterday we went to Bastille Day and it was awesome seeing all those people so excited about the same thing. It's kind of a coming together point and you all get to be excited about a common cause. I've not gotten to the point where I can speak without thinking before, but I can have conversations with people. I'm so proud that I can say that now because it's leaps and bounds from what I was three weeks ago.
“It's really exciting. It's exactly what I wanted it to be when I thought I would come here. I'm just kind of looking now at the next step. What can I do to kind of push myself more? I want to do something above and behind, maybe doing an entire semester in a foreign country. Because that's the thing with languages, you can do so many different things and it's not just where you sit in a classroom. The whole world is out there for you to learn. The whole world is going to help you learn. My motivation is the passion. I want to learn it and so I'm going try my best to learn as quickly as I can.”
