Italian Language Academy

Learn Italian at our immersive summer language program for teens.

Live immersed in Italian language and culture this summer. Whether you're an absolute beginner who has never spoken a word of Italian or an advanced speaker who is hoping to practice Italian in a real-world setting, you will dramatically improve your Italian language skills at the Academy.

For summer 2017, join us in Florence, Italy for an unforgettable language learning experience. This new study abroad site is open to rising 9th-12th grade students, including beginner students with no prior Italian experience.

For four weeks, all programming, events, activities, field trips, meetings and meals will be in Italian. From morning assembly until lights out, you’ll be immersed in language with a group of peers at the same competency level as you. The curriculum is organized by themes that help you navigate life in this new environment and is based on the longstanding tradition of immersion education at Middlebury College's Language Schools.

Why Learn Italian?

Italy is one of the top five economies in the world—an estimated 7,500 American companies do business in Italy and more than 1,000 U.S. firms have offices in Italy—and many employers seek new hires who speak both Italian and English. If that's not enough, Italy is the cradle of the Renaissance, home to many of the most famous painters, sculptors, and other kinds of artists, and learning their native language will give you access to their thought and work in a way not otherwise possible. Need another reason? The food! Italy is famous throughout the world for its incredible food, and studying the language abroad will allow you endless opportunities to sample various Italian cuisines in their country of origin.

Go to Italy this summer to accelerate your Italian language skills while living and studying in Florence, the capital of the region of Tuscany. Considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, you'll have the opportunity to explore incredible works of art and stunning architectural sites—be inspired by Michaelangelo's David and countless other masterpieces from Renaissance artists, as well as architectural wonders such as the Palazzo Vecchio and the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, which is the largest brick construction of its kind in the world. You'll find incredible discoveries around every corner, discover new ways of thinking and make connections with new people and culture that will last the rest of your life.

“A grammar lesson in school takes an hour to teach. At the Academy it's done in a sentence.”
