That's A Wrap: Ending Week One In Style at SMC

July 2, 2017

Just like that, Week One is complete! Our Spanish and Arabic students have officially been at Saint Michael’s for 7 days. This Sunday was both a day of rest and play before students ease back into their weekday routine tomorrow.

Both Arabic and Spanish hosted an exciting guest during their academy programming hours. Spanish students were treated to a visit from Ana’s Empanadas, a local Empanada and Argentine cuisine business. Stations were set-up for rolling dough, choosing fillings, and folding the final product. Students then decorated their empanadas with spices, so they could find there’s once it came out of the oven! Minutes later, they were able to eat and share their homemade empanadas with their classmates outside under the Vermont sun. It was as lovely and as delicious as it sounds.

The Arabic Academy welcomed a guest speaker who gave a presentation on the wold of Arab music. From the history of music, to the many types of traditional instruments, students learned their fare share of new vocabulary about music and the arts.

Much of the students’ Sunday was made-up of (well deserved) free time. Students spent their day lounging outside, doing crafts, making friendship bracelets, watching the Chile v. Germany football game, and much more.

After dinner and study hall, the Arabic students were treated to an all-arabic game of Family Feud! At their post-dinner assembly, Spanish students re-recited their language pledge and received their weekly “premios” (awards). Recognition was given to students with the most spirit, commitment to the language pledge, dedication in the classroom, leadership in the dorms, and enthusiasm in cultural exploration.

“That’s a wrap” on Week One here at SMC. We can’t wait to see where Week Two takes us.
