Saturday Night Fever at SMC!
Happy Saturday! On their first Saturday here at SMC, students were granted their much-needed free time, as well as many opportunities for letting loose during fun activities.
Both the Spanish and Arabic Academies took trips to Church Street in downtown Burlington. I had the pleasure of tagging along with the Arabic Academy, who rode the bus into Burlington and spent time strolling, eating, and shopping - all while speaking in their target language! Check out the photos above of the Arabic Academy posing for group photos on Church Street.
Students across both academies had a busy afternoon with their first calling home times. After the frenzy and flurry of calling home, there was a night of dancing, singing, and socializing lined up for the students.
The Arabic Academy hosted an Ice Cream Social complete with streamers, balloons, disco lights, ice cream, and a whole lot of dancing! There was a relaxed language pledge policy in place, so students were allowed to speak some English and play songs in English. The students energy was high, and their voices loud as they sang along to their favorite songs. Check out this video from their social.
In the student center, the Spanish Academy took over the third floor for their dance. There was a dance floor, food, crafts, board games, and space to hang out with friends. Students danced to Spanish-language songs and often broke out into choreographed dances that they had learned during previous activity hours. Students were singing and clapping along to the lyrics of many of the songs - I was impressed! Off of the dance floor, there was tons of fun to be had; the room was buzzing with friends chatting, playing games, and making tissue-paper flowers to wear in their hair.
