Québécois Dance at the French Academy!
Location: Saint Michael's College
What the French Academy did today: Over the weekend, French danced the days away with a Quebec dance workshop AND academy-wide dance on Saturday. On Sunday, the students re-affirmed their commitment to the Language Pledge™ through another ceremony. Today, students returned to normal schedules and explored many of the same cultural immersion activities as last week. Tomorrow afternoon, the students will have the opportunity to watch an African dance group's performance and draw cultural comparisons to this weekend's activities! We are looking forward to seeing their language and personal growth over the course of Week 2!
In today's classrooms...
Level 1 students practiced their communication skills through the can-do statement of "I can identify and name 5-10 food items I eat." They read menus, described food items, and identified contexts where they would eat certain meals.
In Level 2, students focused on interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication. Their can-do statements included "I can read and understand maps from the target culture(s) and my own," as well as "I can give simple directions on how to get from one place to another and what to do at each location." They practiced finding their way around a city using maps, giving and listening to directions in a game of "Hide and Seek," and identifying locations on a digital tour of Montreal
Level 3 students focused on the same communication skills, but their can-do statement for the day was: "I can understand audio recordings and video about everyday life in the target country/countries." They compared and contrasted city and country life in the US, as well as in other countries.
In Level 4 classes, students honed in on eating habits, customs, and values. Their can-do statement was "I can watch, read, and listen to information about nutritional and health recommendations from public announcements in the target country, and summarize what was stated."
