Ping-pong, Paper-folding, and Pal-Bonding at the Chinese Academy!
Location: Saint Michael’s College
What the Chinese Academy did today: Wow, what an INCREDIBLE first week of classes! The students are holding conversations, cracking jokes, and finding any and every way to apply their new language skills. Today, the kids attended both language and cultural immersion lessons, played sports/attended clubs in the afternoon, and got excited for the weekend!
Here are some of the language-learning goals that students accomplished this week:
Level One completed a “Language Survival Guide.” They've mastered can-do's such as: “I can copy the letters of the alphabet” and “I can greet friends, say goodbye, express gratitude, and apologize.”
Level Two focused on Introductions and Routines, mastering topics like: “I can exchange personal information to get to know people around me” and “I can identify and present basic information about routines, interests, pastimes, and household tasks of teenagers in the target country/countries.”
Level Three honed in on Conversation, Feelings Daily Life and Routines. They tackled: “I can start, maintain, and ends a conversation with my classmates to get to know them” and “I can explain a series of steps needed to complete a task related to my routine.”
Level Four students have quickly become leaders within the Academy, sharing previous and new knowledge with all students! This week, they practiced the following: “I can read and identify the main idea and details in an article or other media from the target country/countries,” and “I can outlining strategies for success in an immersion environment and present them to the other students of the academy.”
On Friday, the kids will participate in LOADS of cultural activities with their teachers and RAs! On Saturday, an all-Academy dance will take place -- giving them a chance to communicate and bond with some of the students in the Arabic, German, French, and Spanish Academies. Then, on Sunday, they will finally be able to call home for the first time since Arrival Day! After that, they’ll have the opportunity to make and fold homemade dumplings! Delicious!
