Learning through Games at the German Academy!
Location: Saint Michael’s College
We’ve had an excellent start to Week 2 here at the German Academy! Students are settling back into their class schedules and truly taking off in their German-speaking abilities. Last night, the kids made mosaics and played a variety of games together. Today, they will continue learning more material in their classes and preparing for tomorrow’s Fourth of July celebrations! The Language Pledge™ will be lifted during that time, so students will have the opportunity to communicate and bond with the students from the Arabic, French, Spanish, and Chinese Academies.
In today’s classrooms…
Level 1 students continued to work on interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication. Their can-do statement of the day was, “I can give a simple description of an object’s color, size, and location.” They learned about descriptive adjectives, prepositions, and sentence structures through games like “Lost and Found” and “I Spy.”
Students in Level 2 classes focused on the can-do statement of “I can ask and respond to simple questions based on images and text in a menu.” They will continue to learn about different types of food, how to order in a restaurant, and how to communicate in a meal-time setting.
In Level 3 classrooms, students are also learning about eating etiquette, but with greater nuance and complexity. Their can-do statement was “I can analyze the importance of food on social dynamics in the target culture (Food as a vehicle for gathering, celebrations, types of food for different events, etc.)
This evening, students will participate in a Scavenger Hunt among other activities with their RAs. We are so proud of all of their progress.
