El Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James)
Comillas happens to be one of the stops on the northern route of the famous Way of Saint James or commonly known as El Camino de Santiago. Comillas Academy students watched the film called “The Way” starring Martin Sheen as an introduction to the many reasons why hundreds of people annually make this pilgrimage.
This was followed by a cultural exploration excursion to the Albergue de Peregrinos in Comillas. This curious building also known as “La peña” was built in 1879 as the city jail, but has recently been remodeled to house 20 pilgrims on the Way of St. James.
When we arrived there was a young American sitting outside waiting for it to open as he was on his pilgrimage by himself. It turns out that he was from the same high school as one of our students!
After listening to the history of the Way of St. James from our guide Mónica, students received the traditional St. James conch, as a symbol of walking at least a small part of the pilgrimage.
