Dancing and exploring in Nantes

July 6, 2017

Week 2 of the program is all about exploring the city, so we started off the week with a great scavenger hunt.

Students went around Nantes in small groups with the RAs to have some free time in the city center. One of the activities was to ask questions to French people (under the supervision of RAs) so they could practice their French. They all did great and each student won a little prize for taking part in the game, and the winning group won a special one.

After exploring, students had an evening of dancing, introducing them to traditional dances from Brittany (check out the video above!). We had a live band and a few people teach us how to dance. We all had a lot of fun and we hope you will enjoy the video showing how good the students were at it.

This week, students are separated in 4 groups to visit some of the most interesting places in Nantes: a memorial commemorating slavery’s abolition in France, Nantes’ history museum, the castle, and the Machines of the Isle of Nantes (les Machines de l’Île). Groups will change every day so all students can enjoy these visits.

Les Machines de l’Île is an artistic and cultural project based on one of the Islands in the Loire River, and one of Nantes’ most frequented tourist attractions. It includes our Great Elephant, a mechanical elephant which can take up to 49 passengers for a ride. There is also the “Marine World Carousel” which is separated in three levels representing the oceans: the ocean floor, the depths, and finally sea and boats. This project is inspired by the literary worlds of Jules Verne and the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci.

On Tuesday, to celebrate 4th of July, students had a barbecue with French families on campus. They were able to interact with French students from the International Section of our host school. Both the French and American students enjoyed getting to know each other.

Stay tuned for a blog post about the rest of the week and all the fun activities students had!

Already a week of adventure in Nantes! The first few days in Nantes! A little tour of Nantes!
