Arabic Academy’s Last Days

July 16, 2014

As we are winding down with the last day here at Pomona, here are some final Arabic academy updates! Students were really excited as we surprised them withs’mores galore one evening. The sugar made it a little more difficult to put them tobed but it was worth the smiling chocolate faces. Teachers paid a visit to the dorm and had a chance to play chess, soccer and chat with students over gooey goodness in the cool California evening weather.

Their competitive side came out over a fun Jeopardy game in which students were separated in their living groups. Topics included grammar, entertainment, culture, “How do you say” riddles, and staff questions, among others. Students had a minute and a half to collaborate with their group members before relinquishing their answer to Language Director Khalid. The two female groups won first and second place while the male groups followed closely behind.

During activity time, we have had frisbee, soccer, ping pong, watching Finding Nemo, basketball, painting and a photo-shoot in which RA Marji had girls take pictures in the traditional Palestinian thoub across Pomona’s beautiful campus. Assistant Language Director Shurouq and RA Marji also had several dance classes! In cultural exploration, students are designing their own t-shirts to take home with them decorated with their favorite Arabic phrases as a little token of their MMLA memories.
